Spring Reception 2005

Alumni Presentation Series and Spring Reception
Sir Richard Dearlove

How is your counter-intelligence? Sir Richard Dearlove was our guest at the second in our Oxbridge Alumni Presentation Series on Thursday, 14th April, at THE CAMBRIDGE BOAT CLUB, Gerry's Landing, Cambridge, Mass.. Sir Richard was head of MI-6 (Ministry of Intelligence, Dept. 6), Britain's Secret Intelligence Service, from 1999 to 2004. In August 2004, he was elected Master of Pembroke College, Cambridge.

The head of MI-6 is traditionally referred to in British government circles as "C", and for many years the position of chief of MI-6 was so secretive that the actual name of the person was never released to the public. (For our American members, MI-6 is Britain's counterpart to America's C.I.A.) Richard Dearlove graduated from Queens' College, Cambridge, and joined the Secret Intelligence Service in 1966. For considerably more details on his career and the operations of MI-6, a very informative series of articles can be found at this suitably cryptic link

Sir Richard provided a very interesting presentation and then answered many questions from an inquiring audience. The questions ranged from "How did you join MI6 ?", to "What impact did Intelligence have on deciding to go to war in Iraq ?", and also covered pretty much everything in between.

A few pictures from the evening are included below.
