Prentice Cup Tennis, Wednesday August 8, 2012

Oxcamne members are cordially invited to the Longwood Cricket Club in association with the Intercollegiate Tennis Match for the Prentice Cup to view matches between Oxford-Cambridge and Harvard-Yale, starting at
4 pm on Wednesday, August 8. Every two years since the 1920’s an Oxbridge Team has challenged a Harvard-Yale Team.

Note: if you can't make the August 8th date, or are located closer to Newport, Rhode Island, there is also an opportunity to see the visiting Oxford-Cambridge team play at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport on Tuesday August 7th.  For details visit this page.

The Prentice Cup started in 1921 as the first international intercollegiate tennis event ever held and stands today as the oldest truly amateur tennis competition played on an international scale. It is a match between a joint Oxford/Cambridge Team and a combined Harvard/Yale Team. It takes place every two years alternately in the UK, where it is held at the All England Club, and in the USA, where it is held at the Seabright Lawn Tennis and Cricket Club. The visiting sides of six players tour the host country for a total of 6 weeks, this year playing at some of the most prestigious tennis clubs in the United States.

In 2008, led by a dominant Oxbridge Team, the British won by the highest score in 80 years. But in 2010 Harvard-Yale prevailed at the All England Club in Wimbledon. This year Oxbridge hopes to avenge its recent defeat.
