Christmas Dinner, Saturday 3rd Dec 2016

The Oxford and Cambridge Society of New England cordially invites you to the
Annual Christmas Dinner
Saturday 3rd December 2016
Winchester Country Club
“University Inventions that Changed the World”
Dr. Ashley Stevens (Corpus Christi)
Focus IP Group, LLC

U.S. universities spend close to $70 billion a year on research, two thirds of it funded by you and me through our taxes.  The bulk of that research results in abstruse scientific publications, freshly minted Ph.D.’s and, occasionally, Nobel Prizes.  Some, even some that won Nobel Prizes, also results in inventions that have reshaped everyday life.

Longtime OXCAMNE member Dr. Ashley Stevens has spent the past 25 years helping take some of those inventions from the lab to the marketplace, first at Dana-Farber, then at Boston University and now as an independent consultant.  Along the way he’s had the opportunity to investigate the fascinating stories behind some of the most disruptive of those innovations. He will share a few of those stories with us, starting with the biggest of them all, which appropriately enough, came to us from Boston University.

Before founding Focus IP Group, LLC, an intellectual property consulting company in 2011, Dr. Stevens was Director of the technology transfer office at Boston University for seventeen years.  For ten years he taught a graduate-level, inter-disciplinary course on Technology Commercialization in Boston University’s Questrom School of Business and is a Guest Professor at Osaka University, where he continues to teach an intensive version of this course, G-TEC, each summer.  He is a Principal Investigator at the National University of Singapore (Suzhou) Research Institute.  Before joining Boston University, he was Director of the Office of Technology Transfer at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, a teaching affiliate of the Harvard Medical School.  Prior to entering the technology transfer profession, Dr. Stevens worked in the biotechnology industry for nearly ten years and co-founded two companies.  He is a Past President of AUTM and has lectured and published extensively on technology transfer, licensing and commercializing early stage technologies.

Dr. Stevens holds a BA in Natural Sciences, an MA and a D.Phil. in Physical Chemistry from Oxford University.  He is a Certified Licensing Professional and a Registered Technology Transfer Professional.

Attire for gentlemen will be black tie, college blazer or business suit.

The event is open to OCSNE members and their guests. Tickets cost $100 per person ($85 for student members)  including wine and port with dinner and reception drinks. Please reserve online (you can pay using PayPal, a credit/debit card, or by check), for more information contact David Manns at

The Winchester Country Club has ample parking. Directions are here.
Although the Winchester Country Club is in the suburbs, one of the reasons we selected it is that it is readily accessible from Boston and Cambridge by public transportation.

Take the Red Line to Alewife and transfer to the 350 bus.  If you pay on the Red Line with your Charley Card, swiping the Card on the 350 will get you a free transfer.  Take the 350 to the Mystic Street / Old Mystic Street stop and you will be 50 yards from the Winchester Country Club. Outbound service runs every 20 minutes in the early evening -- there is a bus at 5:40, which will get you there  a few minutes early, or at 20 minute intervals thereafter through 6:20, after which it becomes less frequent.

Coming back, the buses are less frequent. The last buses are at 9:46pm and 10:46pm.  The Club tells us that this bus is very reliable and that a number of the Club employees catch it.

This mailing also serves as the notice for the Annual Meeting of Members (AGM) and the Regular Meeting of Directors, which will take place at the dinner.

Sincerely,                                                                  Reception: 6:00 pm, Dinner: 7:15 pm
