Christmas Dinner, Saturday 2nd Dec 2017

The Oxford and Cambridge Society of New England cordially invites you to the
Annual Christmas Dinner
Saturday 2nd December 2017
6:00-10:00pm
Winchester Country Club

The Guest of Honor at this Christmas’ dinner is long-time OxCamNE member  Michael Kosterlitz, who shared the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2016 "for theoretical discoveries of topological phase transitions and topological phases of matter".  Mike will explain what condensed matter and phase transitions are, hopefully including details of the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition, named after Mike and his collaborator and fellow Nobelist, David Thouless – in terms that this highly educated but proudly generalist audience can understand!

Mike is the perfect Nobel Prize winner for the Society to honor – he received his B.A. and M.A. from Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge and his D.Phil. from Brasenose College, Oxford, so both halves of the Society can celebrate his Prize with equal enthusiasm!  Since 1982, Mike has been a Professor of Physics at Brown University and, with his wife Berit, has been a regular attendee at OxCamNE events for over 30 years.

Attire for gentlemen will be black tie, college blazer or business suit.

The event is open to OxCamNE members and their guests. Tickets cost $100 per person ($85 for student members)  including wine and port with dinner and reception drinks. Please reserve online (you can pay using PayPal, a credit/debit card, or by check), for more information contact David Manns at secretary@oxcamne.org. Advance reservation is required and should be made by Monday November 27th.

The Winchester Country Club has ample parking. Directions are here.  Although the Winchester Country Club is in the suburbs, one of the reasons we selected it is that it is accessible from Boston and Cambridge by public transportation. There is infrequent bus service (bus 350) between Alewife Station and the club (Mystic Street/Old Mystic Street stop), or it is a short Lyft/Uber ride from Alewife.

This mailing also serves as the notice for the Annual Meeting of Members (AGM) and the Regular Meeting of Directors, which will take place at the dinner.

Sincerely,                                                                  Reception: 6:00 pm, Dinner: 7:15 pm
William Leaf-Herrmann                                       AGM: 8:30 pm, Talk: 8:50 pm,
