Boat Race Dinner, Saturday 4 June, 2011

You are cordially invited to the Society’s annual Boat Race Dinner on Saturday June 4th at The Cambridge Boat Club, Gerry’s Landing, Cambridge, Mass., starting at 6:15pm. View our own Oxford/Cambridge boat race on the Charles from the balcony of the boat house during the reception. If you are interested in rowing in our race, please contact Nick Copley at ncopley@gmail.com.  We will also show the video of the ‘official’ race which took place on the Thames in March.

Our speaker, Kathleen Coleman, (Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford), distinguished scholar, author and teacher, is the James Loeb Professor of Classics at Harvard University and President of the American Philological Association.  Professor Coleman who was born and raised in Zimbabwe, is a graduate of the University of Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) and of Cape Town, and Oxford Universities. She has taught at Cape Town University, Trinity College, Dublin, and, since 1998, Harvard. An internationally recognized authority on Roman literature and society, Professor Coleman has published widely in the field of Roman spectacle and has received many awards, most recently the 2010 Jerome Lectureship at the American Academy in Rome where her work was characterized as “known for its exemplary integrated use and analysis of literary, epigraphic and artistic sources on the most compelling ancient topics imaginable.”

Her talk this evening is appropriately titled:
“Rowed to death: Naval battles in the Colosseum.”

Attire for gentlemen will be black tie, college blazer or business suit. Festivities will begin at 6:15 pm and include our own boat race on the Charles River. We remind those who plan to come that we give a commitment to our caterers several days before the dinner, and that after that point we are unable to refund any payment. The cost of the dinner is $95 per person ($75 for full time students).

Directions to the Cambridge Boat Club are also on the website
