Cricket Match
Longwood Cricket Club, 564 Hammond Street, Chestnut Hill, MA.
starting at 1:00p.m. The Society's team, the Faded Blues,
took on the New England champions, St. Columba's CC of Newport, RI in a 25-over game.
This was a historic occasion. As its name suggests Longwood, which was established
in 1877, began as a cricket club and though it eventually became dedicated to tennis --
site of the first and many subsequent Davis Cup matches; also of the annual US Pro
Tennis Championships - it has retained its original title. The last cricket match
to be played there was in 1933, exactly seventy-five years ago, and by way of celebrating the anniversary
of this event the directors of the club very generously allowed us the use of the lawns for this match.
